Character: Gene Starwind
Series/Fandom: Outlaw Star
Original or Alternate: Alternate
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Species: Terran (human)
Sexuality: Bisexual
Appearance: Gene is every inch an Outlaw. He stands at 6'0 even, with tanned skin, a muscular build, broad shoulders and a narrow waist. He has stick-straight, messy hair which falls down directly in his dark green eyes. He has two jagged scars in his left cheek, and many other scars that look like lacerations or as if they were cut by shrapnel. He sports large, identical red-orange star tattoo on either upper arm. Gene wears small blue stud earrings in both ears (the right is a communicator to the Outlaw Star, the left is a communicator to Jim). He usually wears a sleeveless, skin tight black body suit with a white belt, blue gloves with white wrist and hand guards, and a tan cloak with blue armored shoulders.
Personality: The first thing one might notice about Gene Starwind, as it is blatantly obvious, is that he is a pervert. He flirts openly and shamelessly with any pretty woman, but he's not opposed to sleeping with men either, even if he's not as obvious about it. He drinks, fights and generally gets himself into frequent trouble with people on both sides of the law. Gene is cocky, incredibly stubborn, reckless, often lazy, and loud. Despite all this, he is (arguably) not a bad guy. As an Outlaw, Gene considers himself to have a set of morals, even if said morals don't always agree with the rules. Despite all his bad qualities, Gene is cheerful and protective of his friends and his partner Jim. He follows through and keeps his promises.
Abilities/Strengths: Gene is skilled at hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, and is an excellent grappler pilot. He is comfortable with just about any sort of weapon he can lay hands on. Gene has the ability to keep his cool in dangerous situations.
Weaknesses: Gene has trouble getting close to anyone for fear of making himself vulnerable. The only exception to this is Jim, who he's known for six years. Jim himself is a weakness for Gene, as the man would do anything for his partner. Gene also seems to have the devil's luck. He is forever finding himself in dangerous situations. Although sometimes it seems that he revels in impossible situations and getting out of them. There are times he has little sense of self-preservation. Gene can also be somewhat self-destructive with liquor and sex.
Notable Possessions: Gene keeps on him at all times a weapon known as a Caster gun. Archaic for the time, Casters use bullets made of crystallized mana. There are 20 types of caster shells, each containing a different spell with a different effect. The most dangerous shells are 4, 9, and 13. They are also the most rare and hard to find (although caster shells in general are somewhat hard to come by). This is his favorite weapon to use, though he also has a knife (convenient in brawls), as well as a regular pistol in his belt, and a double short barreled shotgun at his thigh. Very rarely does he not have these on his person.
History: The only family Gene ever remembers having is his father, who was a skilled starship pilot. As a child, Gene aspired to be exactly like his dad, and routinely went out on lesser jobs to learn the controls of his father's ship. On one such trip seemed to be like any other, but proved to be quite life-changing. Kei pirates spotted Gene's father's ship and began attacking it. Aware that he was outmatched, Gene's father forced Gene into the ship's only escape pod and ejected it moments before the ship exploded with his father still inside.
Gene's escape pod crashed on Centinel III, and it was there Gene Starwind remained. He became a bounty hunter to survive, taking out the scum of the endless city Gene lived in. He reveled in his work, taking pride in the lives he took or turned over to authorities. The outlaw always toed the line between law and lawlessness, staying true to his family's roots in that respect.
Five years after landing on Centinel III, on a particular job with a particularly dangerous fugitive, Gene's life again changed. He cornered the target in an old warehouse and engaged him in battle. However, the fugitive proved to be a skilled match. On the losing side, Gene began growing somewhat desperate. A voice called out to him, "He's blind in his right eye!" Without questioning this bit of information, Gene exploited the weakness and won, killing the wanted man. Going to leave, Gene felt a tug on his cloak. It turned out the voice belonged to a scruffy, dirty-faced, 9-year-old orphan named Jim Hawking. Jim demanded thanks, and told Gene he could start by buying him dinner. Dinner turned into a business partnership, and Starwind & Hawking enterprises was born.
For two years, Jim and Gene lived and worked together. Jim was easily exasperated by Gene's excessive drinking, womanizing and general recklessness, and Gene was both amused and annoyed at Jim's prudish nature and constant worrying over financial manners. However, both found pleasant company in the other, and each understood the other as no one else could. There was solace, even in their bickering.
Shortly after Jim's eleventh birthday, life again changed for Gene. The outlaw had just secured another bounty, and had intentions of spending the night in drinking and resting from the hard fight. However, a small job had come in, and it had to be done that night or the customer would find another provider. Gene and Jim argued about who would take the job, and Jim eventually gave in. Gene heard the car start outside, then an explosion. Starwind & Hawking Enterprises was at risk of losing half of it's ownership. But more than that, Gene was in danger of losing the only person he cared about a second time. Risking his life to save the boy, he pulled Jim from the burning car, exposing himself to a secondary explosion, caused by the flames reaching the fuel tank.
The next week was a blur of white uniforms and the smell of sanitized death. Doctors told the distressed teen that Jim likely wouldn't survive. Desperate, Gene contacted Fred Luo, an arms dealer and son of the wealthy owner of a large corporation. Although they hadn't been business associates for very long, Fred had a fondness for Gene and Jim. Fred also had connections, and the answer to the dilemma: cybernetics. These machines could keep Jim alive, and even make him stronger and faster than before.
Life continued on. Jim was slowly rehabilitated, and got used to the wires and gadgets now implanted in his body. He and Gene both became quite apt at repairing and upgrading Jim's new hardware (after a couple of trial-and-error sessions that resulted in shocks on both ends). However, Jim wasn't the only one that came away from the incident changed. Gene ended up with two scars on his left cheek, and others all over his body from the metal that peeled away from the car in the second blast. Gene and Jim struggled together to pay back the debt they now owed Fred, although Gene repaid much of the debt without Jim's knowledge.
Four years after that fateful mishap, yet again life was changed. Answering a business call for a rather pretty girl named Rachael Sweet, Gene found himself decieved (something he didn't appreciate). Instead of an innocent girl in need of some help, "Rachael" turned out to be Hot Ice Hilda; an Outlaw like Gene. Hilda had just stolen the key to more than a treasure chest from the Kei Pirates; the same group that killed Gene's father. Hilda led them to the XGP15A-II, a starship built with the combined forces of the Kei Pirates and the Galactic Police Order. It was a ship to find the Galactic Leyline. Hilda sacrificed herself to get Gene, the key (a bio-android named Melfina), and the XGP the chance to get to safety. Despite his space phobia caused by memories of his father's last moments, Gene became the pilot of the amazing space ship.
Gene landed at Blue Haven to get the newly christened "Outlaw Star" stocked with weapons and ammunition, and to get a paint job for it. He ran into a vicious cat girl by the name of Aisha of the Ctarl-Ctarl. Eventually she joined the crew of the Outlaw Star. While back on Centinel III, Gene and Jim got a call from Fred Luo; an assassin had been hired to kill him, and he needed a bodyguard. The assassin turned out to be Twilight Suzuka, a woman who killed her targets at dusk. Gene managed to convince the woman to not kill Fred by winning in a duel with her. She too joined the Outlaw Star's crew.
Attempting to find a way to repair the Outlaw Star and earn more money to pay back their mounting debt to Fred Luo, Gene and Jim worked seperately of each other one day. Both were attacked by pirates. When Gene got back to the ship, Jim was nowhere to be found. They recieved a transmission from the pirate that attacked Jim; the pirate had injected a virus into Jim's cybernetics, one that wouldn't show up on Jim's sensors. He wouldn't know it until it was too late. And the pirate had the only antidote. Melfina said she knew a way to heal Jim without the antidote. But the boy never came back. The pirate claimed he knew nothing. It was as if he'd simply disappeared into thin air.
Gene continued on without his partner for a couple of months, though it was hard for him to do so. He never stopped looking for the boy either. Eventually, he entered a space race at Fred Luo's bidding. At the starting line, he, like Jim before him, suddenly vanished without a trace.
